Clowning Around!

This past Saturday I had the privilege of teaching a portrait lighting seminar at Vistek in Toronto. This is the 2nd time I’ve taught this jam packed 6 hour seminar, where I take students from basic to advanced scenarios in lighting, and touch on use of meters, white balance, and most importantly lighting ratios. This time around I wanted to do something a little different, so I thought, why not photograph a clown. This was something that I always wanted to do, and I thought the class would have fun with it as well.
I had started asking around a few weeks ago, and remembered my friend Giovanni, had been to clown school, so I asked him if he would be interested in participating. He could not make this past Saturday so he referred me to his friend Shantelle Landry-whose characters name is “Organia”. Unfortunately I did not have enough time during the class to get the details on her characters name. She was absolutely one of the most incredible subjects I’ve yet to photograph. She came out, when I introduced her to my class, in full character and stayed that way for the entire 6 hours. What a trooper, and an absolute delight to work with. I would have to say that everyone in my class left with a great sense of accomplishment, at the end of the day, as well as, a great portfolio of images. I shot over 300 myself, and I’ve just begun to edit them, but here are just a few of my favorites.
Thanks again to Shantelle, your a real star. This may be the beginning of a new project, I would love to photograph more professional clowns, so if any of you know someone, let me know. Giovanni your next……
